Winston Salem, NC  –Hundreds of students will drop eggs off the Belk Court balcony at Hanes Mall on Saturday, 2/20/10 – all in the name of science.  The competition, designed to promote engineering and science in the K-12 community, asks participants to design a device to protect a raw egg from a second-story drop.  Through the process of addressing a design problem and developing a solution, the aim of the contest is to ignite the spark of excitement about science!

“The Egg Drop Competition is a terrific example of how various sectors of our community are working together to celebrate student performance in math and science”, said Dr. Beverly Sanford, President/CEO of SciWorks.  “Designing a device is a challenge – seeing it work is – wow!”

The Egg Drop Competition kicks off Saturday, Feb. 20 at 9:30 am with a special “drop” by Dr. Donald Martin, Superintendent of Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools and Winston-Salem Mayor, Allen Joines.

“Science and math are very important components of today’s technological world and the Egg Drop Competition is a tremendous way for students to see science and math come alive.”

Dr. Donald Martin, Superintendent of WS/FC Schools.

The contest organizers hope that participation in the contest will encourage students of all ages to consider career options in math, science and other technical diciplines.  Each entrant will receive a t-shirt and individuals and teams will compete for cash prizes and gift certificates.

Those interested in competing or volunteering should go to www.wsfceggdrop.com and hit the registration tab.
