Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, founded on July 13, 1937 by Vernon Rudolph in a small shop in what is now historic Old Salem Museums & Gardens, will hold two community events in Winston-Salem this summer to Celebrate Krispy Kreme as part of the doughnut-maker’s 75th birthday.
Krispy Kreme kicked off its 75th Birthday celebrations in February with the launch of the 2012 Glaze The Nation Tour, bringing its Krispy Kreme Cruiser and 75th celebration festivities to doughnut fans throughout the domestic United States.
July 13 from 7 to 10 p.m., Krispy Kreme will host a street party on Trade Street in downtown Winston-Salem on Friday, followed by a Family FanFest at Old Salem on Saturday, July 14 from 9 a.m. until noon. Both events are open to the public, and admission is free.
The Friday night street party will include a live band at the corner of Trade and Sixth Streets. Food and beverages will be available from vendors along the street as well as from nearby restaurants. The street party will be Winston-Salem’s debut for Krispy Kreme’s Glaze the Nation Tour featuring the Krispy Kreme Cruiser and also will include the new Krispy Kreme Hot Now Mobile Shop that produces hot doughnuts. The street party is being presented in conjunction with the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership.
Krispy Kreme’s 75th birthday celebration will continue with the Family FanFest at Old Salem with a “carnival like” atmosphere featuring rides, games and inflatables along Main Street and on the historic Salem square. The streets of Old Salem will be lined with Krispy Kreme vehicles for “touch a truck,” and there will be numerous special photo and social media opportunities. Additional activities will be provided by local nonprofit groups. At 10 a.m. on July 14, Krispy Kreme officials will dedicate a permanent marker in Old Salem to commemorate the location of the first Krispy Kreme Doughnut shop. Krispy Kreme, of course, will have plenty of doughnuts and coffee on hand for the morning celebration.
“There will be a number of birthday activities at Krispy Kreme shops across the nation and around the world this summer, but the epicenter of Celebrate Krispy Kreme will be here in our hometown of Winston-Salem, N.C.,” Brian Little, Krispy Kreme director of corporate communications, said. “We felt it was important to honor the Winston-Salem roots of the company and share the fun of our 75th birthday party with local community supporters, friends and family.”
“We’re particularly excited about bringing the Glaze the Nation tour to Winston-Salem on July 13 and look forward to continuing the fun with FanFest at Old Salem on Saturday morning,” Little said. “Everyone is invited to both events, and we anticipate people from outside Winston-Salem will want to come to our city to join in the celebration.”
