Celebrating Abraham Lincoln: Self-Made in America Day of Fun Activities February 25

02/03/2012 - In celebration of the exhibition "Abraham Lincoln: Self-Made in America" as well as President’s Day, Old Salem Museums & Gardens will be holding a day of hands-on activities and demonstrations on Saturday, February 25 from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The cost is included in an Old Salem Museums & Gardens All-In-One Ticket, which is $21 for adults and $10 for ages 6-16. Reynolda House Museum of American Art Exhibition Published in American Art Review; Public Invited to Gallery Talks

02/01/2012 - Reynolda House Museum of American Art is celebrating the publication of "Artist-Naturalists in the Early American South," an essay co-authored by Reynolda House’s Director of Public Programs Phil Archer. The scholarly article published in the American Art Review’s February 2012 issue highlights the exhibition "Wonder and Enlightenment: Artist-Naturalists in the Early American South," featuring works by John James Audubon, Charles Fraser, and David Johnson. Curated by Archer, the exhibition is on view through Feb. 20 in the Northeast Bedroom Gallery.

12/07/2011 - Visit Winston-Salem won the bid to host the 2014 USA Masters Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The event will bring an estimated 2,100 athletes, coaches and support staff producing 1,500 hotel room nights and generating $600,000 in economic impact for Winston-Salem July 15-20, 2014.

08/03/2011 - Andy Roddick has joined the list of commitments to play in the Winston-Salem Open at Wake Forest University Aug. 20-27, tournament director Bill Oakes announced today. Roddick, a former World No. 1 who is currently No. 12 in the South African Airways ATP rankings, will receive one of the tournament’s four wildcard entries.

07/15/2011 - Nine Players Ranked in the Top 37 The Winston-Salem Open at Wake Forest University announced today the player field for the inaugural tournament taking place August 21-27. As of today’s announcement, 38 of the 48 slots have been filled in the men’s singles competition through the ATP’s tournament acceptance process. Additionally, the tournament has granted its first "wild card" to previously announced rising young American Ryan Harrison. The deadline for players to submit their interest in playing in the Winston-Salem Open was Monday, July 11.

Dwindling African Moravian Church Celebrates Its Rich History

12/16/2011 - There was a community Lovefeast yesterday at the St. Philips African Moravian Church in Winston-Salem. The congregation and guests shared cups of coffee and sweetened buns. "It goes back to when you have friends and family, you break bread together," says John Jackman, the pastor of another Moravian church in the city. "You share a meal. And so we have a simple meal." Jackman’s is one of 13 Moravian churches in the area, and he came to celebrate at St. Philips. He said the Lovefeast is a song service tied together with a variety of traditional Christian hymns. The Lovefeast service dates back to the early days of the Moravian church. This Protestant group formed in the 15th Century in what is now the Czech Republic. By the 18th Century, the Moravians had migrated to the United States, and in 1766, they founded the settlement of Salem in North Carolina.

11/02/2011 - Although Winston-Salem has a lot to offer from an active arts and culture scene, it’s the downtown district of Old Salem that really earns the city a place on the list. Many of our cities boast historic downtowns, but Old Salem’s is different because of its focus on the town’s former Moravian settlers, and because there is a steadfast effort to keep parts of downtown in a time warp to the 18th century. It’s like a little slice of Old Williamsburg in the center of a mid-sized city. The whole district was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1966, and continues to draw in visitors with its quaint old shops, churches, and costumed reenactors.

10/12/2011 - Winston-Salem's downtown works a little like magic. Once you step into the historic district of Old Salem, you may as well have stepped back into 1772 (with the added bonus of jeans and tennis shoes). The Old Salem district, declared a National Historic Landmark in 1966, is a 100-acre representation of the first settlement in 1766 complete with restored shops, churches and live reenactments. The downtown is otherwise separated into four areas (Western Districts, Arts Districts, Fourth Street Districts and South Districts). Each district has its own look and feel.
