The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church Piedmont District will meet in Winston-Salem June 23-28, 2009. The conference is being hosted by Goler Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church with Reverend Dr. Seth O. Lartey the host Pastor.
According to Dr. Lartey, "the reason we are holding our convention in Winston-Salem this year is due to the spirit of cooperation and assistance from Visit Winston-Salem, the Twin City Quarter, The Millennium Center and community leaders. Everyone has been very gracious and helpful and extremely accommodating of our needs". Previous conferences have been held in Charlotte, Gastonia, Hickory and Salisbury.
Bishop George W. C. Walker, Sr. is the keynote speaker, leader of the district and Senior Bishop of the A.M.E. Zion Church.
Dr. Lartey notes that during Bishop Walker's tenure he has accomplished much including a $5.9 million building project in Black Mountain and another $10 million in development throughout the district. Bishop Walker is also the spokesperson for Balm and Gilead, an international organization that promotes safety to prevent AIDS. He is the senior Bishop for all AME Zion churches in the district and the Trustee Chair for Livingstone College.
Included in the planning of the conference is Reverend Dr. Calvin L. Miller, the presiding Elder of the Winston-Salem district.
