NASA Astronaut Lands at SciWorks
After graduating from Wake Forest University, Dr. Thomas Marshburn pursued a career in medicine that eventually led him from the emergency room to NASA and his first mission to space. In July, he spent almost two weeks aboard the International Space Station helping to expand the orbiting outpost to its full capability for human occupation and science research.
Museum Quest
To kick off the start of the New Year, Winston-Salem area museums are offering the public a great adventure for a great price. Between January 1, 2010 and March 31, 2010, after visiting one of the participating museums, be sure to hang on to the ticket stub. That stub will be a visitor's magic carpet to a quest of the area's most interesting and enriching sites. Purchase one full price ticket at any of the area's participating museums, and then show the ticket stub at any one of the other four attractions and receive general admission at half price.
SciWorks and Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools Host Seventh Annual Egg Drop Competition
Hundreds of students will drop eggs off the Belk Court balcony at Hanes Mall on Saturday, 2/20/10 – all in the name of science. The competition, designed to promote engineering and science in the K-12 community, asks participants to design a device to protect a raw egg from a second-story drop. Through the process of addressing a design problem and developing a solution, the aim of the contest is to ignite the spark of excitement about science!
SciWorks Science Center Awarded Prestigious Grant
Winston-Salem, N.C. - Thanks to a $150,000 2 year grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), SciWorks will soon begin work on fabrication and installation of a new Outdoor Science Park. An 18 month project, the Outdoor Science Park (OSP) will expand the number and scope of outdoor learning opportunities and provide enjoyable, interactive ways for visitors to explore and experience scientific principles at work.
Winston-Salem Celebrates N.C. Science Festival
Winston-Salem, NC - An assortment of hands-on workshops and activities are planned in Winston-Salem and surrounding communities from Sept. 11 through Sept. 26, coinciding with the first annual North Carolina Science Festival, a statewide celebration of science and technology.
